What's it all about?

What's it all about?

When I started at the Academy just over a year ago, one of the personal goals I set myself was to re-establish a cross industry awards.

For me for an industry as vibrant and innovative as ours, not to have such an event just didn’t feel right.

As you’d expect for someone new in a role, I had numerous meetings with various Patrons and stakeholders and I also listened to what Members were telling and the same message kept coming back - we need to get the Awards back. I was left under no illusion that the awards would be emblematic of a new rejuvenated Radio Academy.

But I also wanted an awards event that would represent the new, not just what had happened in the past.I passionately believe we are in a golden age of audio right now, so I wanted an awards ceremony that would be contemporary, dynamic and independent of spirit and thought, a genuine meritocracy.

We were overwhelmed with entries, far, far more than I could possibly have hoped for and this proved the point - the industry wanted the awards back! The work of Phil Riley [Chair of Judges] and all of his fellow judges was amazing and I am so very grateful to all of them, thank you. And to Bob Shennan [ARIAS Chair] who helped us immeasurably with piecing the show together, my sincere thanks and deep gratitude.

The Audio & Radio Industry Awards or ARIAS as we like to call them will not only be a wonderful showcase of our industry’s great work over the last 12 months, it will also be an amazing show and night out. We have tickets available from just £30 plus vat to get a load of this:

  • Welcome Drinks Reception [with complimentary drinks]
  • Show featuring performances from The Kaiser Chiefs, Gregory Porter and Rick Astley.
  • Hosted by the brilliant Sara Cox
  • The biggest names in our Business in attendance
  • Only 16 Awards Categories
  • After Party with DJ sets from Inspiral Carpets legend Clint Boon and the mighty Utah Saints
  • Plus all the glitz and glamour you can shake a stick at

And you don’t have to dress up, though I clearly will be my normal stylish self

When I started at Viking FM in Hull in 1991, I was told “you’re selling showbiz” and I was hooked, Wednesday 19th October at the First Direct Arena in Leeds is going to be showbiz and some, so forget about the old world and embrace the new, think Grammys, not BAFTAS and come and join us to celebrate, be inspired by and party away on our industry’s biggest night of the year!
