That's Good Innit!

That's Good Innit!

As XS Manchester presenter and all round top person Clint Boon says - “that’s good innit,” and for those of us in the rapidly expanding community of passionate radio and audio lovers at The Radio Academy, it really is.

The sense of energy and optimism prevailing in the sector at the moment is palpable and I am so proud that The Radio Academy is proving to be the focal point and conduit for this, as we bring people together to learn, share and celebrate. The growing number of Patrons and Members to the Academy and record number of entries for the Reelworld Radio Academy 30 under 30 and ARIAS are all such positive indicators of that.

BBC Radio 1’s Scott Mills is hosting the ARIAS this year and I’m delighted he’s agreed to do so, it promises to be another fantastic party night and don’t forget, it’s FREE for Members to attend, so get your glad rags dusted off, hotel & trains booked and join us for the ‘biggest celebration of sound around’.

We have over 100 Judges for the ARIAS this year, to decide on the various shortlists, and from all corners of the audio sector including podcasting, streaming, audio books, independent production, commentators/critics and of course radio. They represent the depth and breadth of the industry, which is why over half are women and I am very grateful to all of them for giving their time.

We announce the outcome of the judges deliberations on Monday18th September from the Next Radio conference. Virgin Radio’s Kate Lawler & Matt Richardson will be hosting and announcing who the finalists are, it will also be streamed.

As I was writing this, my 17 year old son text me to inform me he’d got a job at the local supermarket, the previous week he’d attended his first ever proper job interview for this vacancy and he’d been really nervous bless him. He was so thrilled he’d been offered the job, not because he’s always wanted to stack supermarket shelves, but because it was a recognition of him and how he’d come across. He also craved [as we all do] for friends and family to say, well done!

Our greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated, my son’s experience illustrated that and initiatives like the 30 under 30, our Fellowships and the ARIAS provide wonderful opportunities to get recognition and appreciation from your peers. This is why, at The Radio Academy, I feel it is one of the most important aspects of what we do, if you get shortlisted by the judges etc it is obviously wonderful, but to also know that beyond just telling you how well you’re doing, your boss/colleagues/company are prepared to put time and effort into nominating, supporting and encouraging you to enter gives you a real sense of appreciation.

Finally, as you may have seen, we announced the 6 shortlisted for both the Individual of the Year and Team of the Year categories, that are voted on by Members. Going by the overwhelming popular reaction on social media and the humble acknowledgements and appreciation of all those nominated, it just goes to prove my point.

Good Luck to everyone and you can vote here.

As the legend Clint says - “that’s good innit”
