Cyrella McGreevy – Senior Traffic Executive

chris

Cyrella used to work as a Senior Traffic Executive for Global Radio. Previous to this she worked at an AM station in London and at a local BBC station. At college she volunteered with student station Luton.fm.

Why did you want to work in radio?

I have always loved radio and at school I decided that I wanted a career in radio so when it came to the time of choosing a university I chose one that did an excellent media and radio degree.

Were you involved with hospital/student/community radio?

At university I threw myself into anything radio and as well as being the chairperson of the radio society, I also presented and produced on my university's station, Luton.fm. In my last year at university, I did a special project instead of a dissertation and became one of 5 managers to completely run the station. That was hard work but gave me valuable hands on experience of the day to day running of a station

What was your big break?

After leaving university, I became the Assistant Producer on a Saturday morning show on an AM station in London which then led to me assisting on a show at my local BBC radio station. I then had my biggest break when I went for a Traffic Assistant job at Global and got it! I spent the next 2 years working there on Heart, LBC and Galaxy.

What was the interview process like?

The interview process was pretty nerve wrecking as I really wanted the job but all 3 interviewers (yes 3!) were really nice. It was helpful that I had researched the company history beforehand and was able to wow them with my knowledge.

What is your career high-point to date?

Definitely my promotion to Senior Traffic Executive. I worked really hard for this role and took great pleasure in bossing the new assistant around (only kidding!) I just loved having more responsibility and helping the other assistants learn new things.

What’s day-to-day life like as a Traffic Exec?

Hectic! You are very in demand and you have extremely tight deadlines. It's quite social and you get to deal with a lot of people within and outside of the company like producers, presenters, sales and ad agency people.

What would you being doing if you weren’t doing this?

If I didn't do this then id be doing something else in radio

What 3 pieces of advice would you offer to someone just starting out?

  1. Research the role and the company thoroughly before your interview
  2. Be willing to learn new things
  3. Be prepared to party hard! The parties you get invited to are amazing!
