1904 - 1996

John Snagge became an Assistant Station Director in Stoke at the age of twenty. After a move to London, he found himself behind the microphone for the 1931 Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race – an event that he commentated on for the 50 years.
He announced the D-Day Landings and VE Day, and was senior commentator at the 1953 Coronation, while also holding down executive positions with the BBC.
Whether appearing as an announcer, a newsreader or a sports commentator, Snagge's rich, fruity vocal tone was one of the most distinctive in the medium.
