Details on the winner of this years Nations & Regions award, some Yorkshire radio news and a very small teaser for the first event of the year!

Hello!

It always seems wrong to say it more than a week past the 1st but Happy New Year!

We start off 2012 with quite a bit of news for stations broadcasting up the A1 in the north of our patch. First off, congratulations to the team at Garrison Radio, who have been crowned the Nations & Regions Station of the Year for Yorkshire. Their entry was fantastic and they will receive their award at the next Yorkshire Branch event (details at the end of this post!) Here’s what the judges had to say about Garrison’s entry:

Garrison FM showed that they truly excelled in their desire to serve their audience. The station is not only there to entertain and inform but it is also clearly seen by its listeners as a vital part of everyday life, where the lifestyle and needs of listeners is somewhat different and more specific than most.

Despite limited resources, Garrison FM has brought its audience interviews with senior politicians and Army commanders, and reported from some of the most dangerous warzones in order to connect those at home with loved ones abroad.

This station really shows how a local radio station cna not only service its community, but be at the heartbeat of it.

Thanks to all those who entered this year, it was a genuinely close race and I hope we’ll receive many more entries next year from stations who want to step up to the challenge.

There has also been some changes in ownership in the north of the region, with Fresh Radio now a part of UKRD and changing to be an extension of Harrogate based Stray FM. If you’ve not read the full story yet, you can do so here.

With regards to radio news in Yorkshire, I’ve set up an automated feed which will publish all relevant stories on our Yorkshire Branch Facebook page. If you’ve not yet hit the Like button for the page, do it now!

Finally, our FIRST EVENT OF 2012! It’s been in the pipeline for a few weeks now and looks like it will come off, it’s a good one and I’m on the verge of releasing the final date and time to stick in your diary. It will be in Leeds at the end of February. Watch this space!

We're coming back to life in 2012!

Hello,

Thanks for taking the time to find out about the Radio Academy in Yorkshire. To introduce myself, I’m Scott and I’m the new Chair for the Yorkshire Branch, with a new day job as breakfast producer for Capital. Nice to meet you!

In the regions, each Branch is meant to hold at least three events a year – but in 2011 there has been 0 from the Yorkshire Branch! My task for the New Year is to kick-start the Branch again and put some great events on with a wider appeal, achieving some of the Radio Academy’s overall objectives to encourage, recognise and promote excellence in UK radio.

As always, the events will remain a great opportunity to network (and drink lots) with people from other stations in Yorkshire and it’ll be great to see your station put a good attendance in.

I’d appreciate all the help I can get – so if you want to be a part of the Yorkshire Branch Committee and contribute to events with ideas or other help, please get in touch.

My email address and Twitter:
