10.00 Revolution Radio - Consumers Taking Control

Change is blowing in the wind - Last.fm, Muxtape, Hype Machine and most recently Spotify. What do they mean for the industry and for the consumer? Should they be perceived as purely a threat or an opportunity to harness? In this session FRUKT will look at the ways in which digital technology will continue to change how consumers interact with music.

10.20 Andy Parfitt in Conversation

Look up the word multi-tasking in the dictionary and you may well find it accompanied by a picture of Andy Parfitt. Nearly three decades after first joining the BBC as a studio manager, Parfitt is now one of the Corporation’s most experienced, respected and busiest executives and at the end of last year took on yet another new role to add to his already bulging responsibilities of Controller of Radio 1, 1Xtra, the BBC Asian Network and BBC Switch. Parfitt’s newest role of Popular Music Controller now makes him undisputedly the music industry’s key point of contact at the BBC but, despite his seniority and unquestionable importance, how many people know the real Andy Parfitt? This interview will not only aim to discuss Parfitt’s ever-growing importance within the BBC, his various roles and how he sees the evolving relationship between the music and radio industries, but will take a look at the man himself, examining his own radio and music influences growing up, his passions and what now drives him.

11.00 What is Your Audience Doing? A Minute by Minute View

Using Media Monitors’ Audience Reaction Tool, for the first time radio programmers can see exactly what listeners are doing at any given moment. For example: Did an unusually large number of listeners tune out at 3:47 on Thursday afternoon? If they did, now you’ll see why. In this live demonstration, which integrates Portable People Meter (PPM) data from a selection of U.S. radio stations, you will actually witness the audience flow. For the first time in radio history, you will have direct access to the behaviours of the people who make the ratings

You’ll see if they came to you after listening to another station. You’ll see which station and exactly what they were listening to when they made the switch.
Conversely, you’ll see exactly what was happening when they decided to leave your station.
See how a station’s ratings build ... or decrease.
See how to chart any individual song’s aggregate listener behaviour over time..

15.00 The World without Gloop

It’s 2009. Whereas in 1989 a radio professional would have consulted a plugger for information and availability of an artist in 2009 the world has changed. The artists and their managers are at the centre of a fast evolving new world. They may have what traditionally passed for a record company and publisher; they may not. Those entities may be based in West London or on a memory stick in the lead singers’ pocket.

What is certain is the artist/fan relationship is stronger than ever and the gloop in between is potentially very murky…… but becoming clearer by the second. Come diving into the sea of love that is the artistic centric Music Managers Forum and have it made clear by Chairman Brian Message and CEO Jon Webster.
