London Event: Competitions
Posted by London Events at 7 March, 2012, 5:29 pm
Wednesday 21st March | 6pm for 6.30 | The Gibson Building, 29-35 Rathbone Street, London, W1T 1NJ

How to win, lose or draw listeners…..
Hours builders? Quick giveaways? Prizes? Callers or no callers? What’s the best way to be creative on the radio with competitions, promotions and giveaways…?
Capital FM’s Roberto will be joined by a panel of creative radio pros including Clare Baker (Marketing Director, Absolute Radio), Stacey Pratt (Head of Branded Content, Mediacom), Steve Taylor (Creative Commerical Director, Bauer Media) and Dave Vitty (Director of Comedy on The Chris Moyles Show, BBC).
Come and get creative with The Radio Academy as we put competitions, promotions and creativity under the microscope. We’ll look at how commercial radio stations are thinking about new and innovative ways of running branded content and station promotions that keeps the sponsor happy, as well as the listener, and how the BBC would do it. Plus, some practical ways of how best to be creative with those bits that aren’t links, music or adverts!

London Branch: Christian O’Connell meets Neil Fox
Posted by London Events at 20 October, 2009, 3:49 pm
Tuesday 20th October 2009
Ever wondered what it takes to be one of the longest serving and most successful UK radio broadcasters of modern times?
Absolute Radio’s Christian O’Connell interviewed Neil Fox about the highs and some of the lows of an amazing career from Wyvern FM in Worcester, through the Dr Fox years on Capital Radio to the breakfast show on Magic 105.4 and the number one spot in London.
We enjoyed some fantastic archive audio, including Foxy’s original demo for Radio 1, Capital and Radio Luxembourg plus some old photos that really made the good Doctor cringe!

London Branch: Spin Doctors Event
Posted by London Events at 9 September, 2009, 3:46 pm

Spin and the political process – who is setting the agenda?
An MOD spokesman is suing because telling official lies has allegedly made him ill… in which case should attendance at this debate come with a health warning!
As we creep ever closer towards a general election what role will PR and Spin play in the campaign to come – will it be a dirty war or will those inside the beltway change their ways after the expenses scandal?
Given the massive cut backs in newsroom numbers, will Broadcasters be able to sort the puff from the policy?
Thanks to our panel – blogger supreme Guido Fawkes, PR guru Mark Borkowski and The Apprentice's Katie Hopkins, and to our fantastic host Jeremy Vine. The event took place on Wednesday 9th September at the Gibson Building.

London Branch: Children in Need (of Radio)
Posted by London Events at 27 April, 2009, 4:09 pm

Only 87% of the UK's 12.5m children are listening to the radio each week. This is the worst performing age demographic. The competition from TVs, iPods, mobiles and games is usually blamed. But is there more to it? Are we abandoning the future of radio by ignoring children? Will they ever pick up the radio habit?
Michael Carrington (Controller, CBeebies) Matt Deegan (Station Manager, Fun Kids) and Gary Pope (Co-Founder and Director, Kids Industries) joined the discussion hosted by Kirsten OBrien (Presenter, BBC).
Date: 13th May 2009

London Branch: Online, On Demand, On Trial
Posted by London Events at 31 March, 2009, 4:08 pm

The BBC and commercial radio are co-operating on the development of a ‘radio+’. The Sun announced plans to launch an online radio station. Podcasts, audio streams and listen again services are winning audiences. So is the future already here? Or are the new technology possibilities distracting us from the business of making quality programming? And how does anyone make money?
Emily Bell, the Guardian’s Director of Digital Content, Steve Bowbrick from Speechification, and Jon Gaunt, Presenter of SunTalk made up the panel and distinguished journalist and podcaster David Hepworth, editorial director of Word magazine, asked the questions.
Date: 22nd April 2009

London Branch: A Celebration of Radio Comedy
Posted by London Events at 18 March, 2009, 4:05 pm

Band Waggon, ITMA, Educating Archie, Round The Horne, The Navy Lark, Hancock's Half Hour, The Goon Show, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Radio Active, Blue Jam, The Mary Whitehouse Experience, Just a Minute, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, Dead Ringers, Adam & Joe, The Now Show, Down the Line, Listen Against .... radio has been at the forefront of British comedy for more than 80 years – and is in as good a state of health as it ever was.
We celebrated how remarkably effective the wireless has been – and continues to be – at tickling the UK's funny bone. Like a sort of live version of Desert Island Discs but with comedy clips, 6Music Presenter and tiny Radio 4 mascot Jon Holmes talked to special guests including comedy legend Barry Cryer and Steve Punt who shared their favourite moments from the archives and pondered the question of whether radio is still the best environment for new comedy.

Taste and Decency in the Age of Compliance | 20th Jan 09
Some listeners want dangerous and challenging...
Others want safe and comforting...
One listener’s offensive is another’s edgy...
Recent events in radio have shown how difficult it is to make and uphold universal rules on taste, decency and language. Do we need a TV-style watershed?
Does compliance mean stifling creativity?
Join Annie Nightingale, veteran Radio 1 DJ, Richard Lindley, former BBC reporter now chair of the Voice of The Listener & Viewer and Ian Parkinson, Media Consultant/ former Head of Specialist Programmes BBC Radio 1 for a debate about what we can and what we should get away with.
Session host: Trevor Dann
London Branch: Is Community Radio the New ILR?
Posted by London Events at 9 January, 2009, 3:59 pm
A Little Local Difficulty
Is community radio the new ILR?
Volunteer-led community radio has quietly gone from strength to strength, with over130 stations now on-air and increasing recognition amongst both opinion formers and listeners. Meanwhile, local commercial radio is reacting to tough market conditions by broadcasting more networked programming and abandoning sometimes long-established local identities (and presenters) in favour of consistent, national brands. Cut-backs and redundancies are all too common.
We asked whether this heralds the beginning of a new order in the world of local radio.
Chair: Paul Brown CBE (Former Chairman, RadioCentre)
Panellists: Ross Macfadyen (Head of Radio, RNIB), Jennifer Ogole (Chief Executive, Bang Edutainment/Bang FM), Sutish Sharma (Managing Director, Hayes FM), Kevin Stewart (Managing Director, The Coast 106 FM)

Selling a Message
Whether it’s writing and producing commercial spots, making trails or promoting station events, every producer or creative writer shares one common goal … selling a message. GLR: Was it Any Good?
It opened 20 years ago, on October 25th 1988. It was radical, innovative, clever, challenging, funny, and inspiring. It was childish, shambolic, self-indulgent, patronising and silly. But it’s heritage lives on, not just in the formats of BBC 5Live and BBC 6Music, but through the talent it nurtured - Chris Evans, Chris Morris, Danny Baker, Emma Freud, Vanessa Feltz, Nick Abbot…. and many more. Credit Crunch
It’s the hottest topic on the news agenda at the moment – what’s happening to our finances/ our homes/ our pay packets? But are we generating more heat than light when we try to cover economic stories on the radio? Click here for the audio from 2008.
Best of British
With some of this summer’s biggest hits coming from the UK streets - will this see a change in the programming of some of the UK’s local and national stations? Click here for the audio from 2008.
