40 Years of BBC Local Radio and East Midlands' Nations & Regions Awards
4th December 07 - Queens Building, DeMontfort University, Mill Lane, Leicester
It all started in 1967 with BBC Radio Leicester... The Radio Academy in the East Midlands is celebrating the success of local radio and asking how should it change in the future? With Stephen Butt, Senior Broadcast Journalist, Radio Leicester and Ben Jckson, award winning Breakfast presenter BBC Radio Leicester. Interviewer will be radio presenter and educationalist Steve Merike. Forty years ago, a unique experiment launched on the airwaves… a new kind of broadcasting which broke the rules to create a radio revolution. Four decades on, and BBC Local Radio is a very different animal, having grown from eight experimental stations to the 40 local services that now serve communities across the land. But far from inviting all ages to listen, the BBC Trust is very clear of what they expect from local radio, insisting "the target audience should be listeners aged 50 and over, who are not well-served elsewhere". The winner of the East Midlands Nations & Regions Award 2007 will also be announced during the evening.
